Decanoic acid is also known as caprylic acid, n-decanoic acid and decanoic acid. It is a by-product of the hydrolysis of laurel oil, coconut oil or litsea cubeba oil to produce lauric acid.

Decanoic acid is a white crystal with an unpleasant odor. It is insoluble in water and soluble in dilute nitric acid and most organic solvents. Melting point (oC) 31.5, boiling point (oC, normal pressure) 270, insoluble in water, soluble in most organic solvents and dilute nitric acid.

It is pointed out that the uses of decanoic acid are as follows:

1. It is mainly used to prepare decanoic acid ester products, and its esters can be used as spices and moisturizers. Wetting agents, plasticizers and food additives, etc.

2. Mainly used as raw material for plastic plasticizers and cationic fungicides. Its fatty acid esters have a fruity aroma and are used as spices.
