Wax is a general term for a series of natural or synthetic products. “Wax” is first of all some organic matter in nature, used for lighting (candles), as opposed to “oil”. The former is a solid at room temperature and quickly becomes a liquid after heating; the latter is a liquid at room temperature. In addition, there is an intermediate state of “fat”. The earliest waxes mostly came from animals and plants. Generally speaking, candles are made of paraffin, stearic acid, beeswax, and palm oil mixed in a certain proportion.

Today, let’s learn about palm wax:

1. Properties and advantages of palm wax:

Palm wax is a kind of vegetable wax prepared from plants as raw materials through a complex process. It is also an important of non-petroleum wax. It is an excellent raw material for candles. It has high hardness, solid acid, a certain smell, and has the characteristics of a lens.

A mixture of fatty acids mainly composed of stearic acid and palmitic acid: Candles made from palm wax or plants, compared with candles made from paraffin wax, have longer burning time, less smoke, less “tears”, and It has the advantages of soft and long-lasting fragrance and better color. It is a natural, green and environmentally friendly product.

Mainly used as emulsifier, hardener, candle, glazing and polishing.

2. Stearic acid and palmitic acid in palm wax:

Stearic acid:

It is a white flake, bead or block solid at room temperature. It is composed of saturated fatty acids mainly C16 and C18. It is insoluble in water, slightly soluble in benzene and carbon disulfide, easily soluble in hot ethanol, non-toxic and tasteless, and has the general chemical properties of organic carboxylic acids. Stearic acid is a fatty acid widely found in nature. Almost all oils contain stearic acid in varying amounts. The content is higher in animal fats. For example, the content in butter can reach 24%, and in vegetable oils it is less. , tea oil is 0.8%, palm oil is 6%, but the content of cocoa butter is as high as 34%. There are two main production methods for industrial stearic acid: fractionation method and pressing method. A decomposing agent is added to the hardened oil, and then it is hydrolyzed to obtain crude fatty acids, which are then washed, distilled, and decolorized to obtain the finished product, while glycerol is produced as a by-product.

Used in agricultural chemicals, food, crayons, candles, cement, coatings, inks, leather waxes, lubricants, metal processing, mining, pencils, capsules and ointments, plastics, tire rubber, textiles, paper making and other industries. It is also widely used as papermaking aids, release agents, polishing agents, metal mineral flotation agents, solvents for oil-soluble pigments, crayon slip agents, wax paper polishing agents, emulsifiers, etc.

Palmitic acid:

White solid, insoluble in water, slightly soluble in petroleum ether, soluble in ethanol. Easily soluble in ether, chloroform and acetic acid. It is obtained by vacuum fractionation of mixed fatty acids or fatty acid methyl esters obtained from coconut oil and palm oil.

Raw materials for the production of candles, soaps, greases, softeners and synthetic detergents, raw materials for fabric softeners, and can also be used as raw materials for the production of alcoholamines, amides and sulfonated products for detergents.
