SABIC develops and verifies thermal runaway isolation solution for two-wheel electric vehicle batteries

Global manufacturers, especially those in India and China, are increasingly required to address fire safety issues in battery systems for electric two-wheelers. After a fire accident occurred in two-wheeled electric vehicles, the industry is looking for better solutions, especially since the current solutions have problems with phase change material leakage and are not ideal.

Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), a global diversified chemical company, has developed a new thermal runaway (TRA) barrier solution using existing STAMAX™ flame retardant resin technology to improve the fire safety of two-wheel electric vehicle batteries.

When the thermal runaway barrier layer of STAMAX resin encounters an open flame or high heat, it will immediately form small dents similar to coke. Within minutes, these charcoal additions form an expanding layer that acts as a barrier to the cells, meaning that if one cell is damaged, the fire will not spread while the other cells will remain intact.

UL test

SABIC collaborated with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to test the thermal runaway barrier solution to verify its performance. The test consisted of placing 25 standard 18650 cylindrical cells in a box with 2 mm thick FR
The STAMAX 30YH570 resin barrier layer separates them, and then triggers the two cells in the middle, causing thermal runaway.

Subsequently, the damage to the remaining 23 cells was observed. It was found that these batteries can work safely without heat penetration or damage.

SABIC FR STAMAX 30YH570 resin has received UL’s official certification mark for its thermal resistance and mechanical properties under thermal runaway conditions.

Advantages for partners

SABIC’s unique injection-molded, one-piece thermal runaway barrier solution offers numerous advantages for electric vehicle batteries, including:

●Easy to disassemble

● Easy to manufacture, suitable for mass production, production cycle is less than one minute

● Easy to expand, suitable for cylindrical batteries of various sizes and capacities

● Lighter weight compared to traditional metals

● Reduce costs

● Reduce weight

● Improve fire safety

● Thermoplastic solutions are easy to recycle
