Solvay expands China Research and Innovation Center and unveils new R&D building in Shanghai

On September 6, Solvay held the unveiling ceremony of its new R&D building in its Shanghai Science and Technology Park, announcing the completion of the expansion project of its China Research and Innovation Center. Since 2005, Solvay has invested more than RMB 4 billion in China’s research and innovation center, aiming to provide stronger support to local customers and meet the region’s strong demand for innovative and sustainable solutions.

The completion of the new R&D building, named “Magnolia Building”, marks another important step for Solvay in promoting innovation in China, the world’s largest chemical market. “The Chinese market is of great strategic importance in our global strategy. We will continue to expand investment to meet the needs of the Chinese market,” said Solvay Group CEO Ilham
Kadri said. “With the strengthening of Solvay’s research and development capabilities in China, we will accelerate the pace of innovation to contribute to a circular economy and a sustainable future in response to global trends and changing local needs.”

The R&D building has many laboratories with advanced facilities. The building has specially set up a small test laboratory for the application research of advanced materials, and also customized an exclusive space for industrial application and consumer product research. As an innovation platform, the completion of the new building will dedicate many resources to key areas such as green hydrogen, electronics and semiconductors. It is worth mentioning that the Yulan Building has also set up an automation and robotics laboratory – which marks a qualitative leap for Solvay in the process of digital development and transformation.

“We are continuously strengthening Solvay’s research and innovation capabilities in China to meet the changing needs of a rapidly developing industry. The additional R&D resources will help us improve R&D efficiency in a range of markets and cooperate with regional customers. to work more closely together,” says Pascal

In addition to the new R&D building unveiled today, Solvay also recently established a new material application R&D center in Shanghai. This strategic move aims to meet the growing demand for customized high-performance material solutions in major local end markets such as automotive, new energy, lifestyle solutions and pharmaceuticals, smart devices and semiconductors.

Founded in 1997, Solvay China Research and Innovation Center has grown into the third largest research center in the world, with a strong research team of about 170 scientists, engineers and technicians. In the past five years, the center has applied for 89 patents and published 84 papers in international academic journals, 15 of which were on the cover of journals. Solvay China Research and Innovation Center has excellent core capabilities in developing advanced materials applications and enhancing synthesis and processes to provide innovative solutions for key markets such as transportation, industrial applications and consumer goods. The center has established strong partnerships with clients and open innovation collaborations with academic institutions and universities around the world.
