Japan s Mitsui Chemicals supplies bio-based bisphenol A to MGC for polycarbonate production

Japanese petrochemical company Mitsui Chemicals plans to supply bio-based BPA to other producer Mitsubishi Gas Chemical (MGC)
(BPA) for the production of bio-based polycarbonate at its Kashima plant in eastern Ibaraki Prefecture.

Mitsui Chemicals did not disclose the amount of bio-bisphenol A supplied to MGC, nor the planned output of bio-polycarbonate. MGC also plans to use its methanol made from carbon dioxide, green hydrogen and recycled plastic to make polycarbonate in the coming years.

Since December 2021, Mitsui Chemicals has been producing biomass-based petrochemicals such as ethylene, propylene, benzene, polypropylene, polyethylene and phenol by purchasing bio-based naphtha from Finnish refiner Neste. Before MGC purchased bio-based bisphenol A from Mitsui Chemicals, the Japanese company Teijin also purchased bio-based bisphenol A from Mitsui Chemicals for the production of polycarbonate.
