[Properties]Succinic acid is named succinic acid because it exists in amber. It also exists in fossils, seaweeds, lichens, and fungi. Medium, colorless and odorless, strongly acidic monoclinic columnar crystals. There are two crystal forms: α form is stable below 137°C; and β form is stable above 137°C. The relative density is 1.572 (25°C), the boiling point is 235°C, the melting point is 188°C, and the refractive index is 1.450 (20°C). When heated at the melting point, it sublimates and dehydrates to form succinic anhydride. Soluble in cold water and ethanol, very soluble in boiling water, soluble in methanol, slightly soluble in acetone, slightly soluble in ether, insoluble in benzene, carbon disulfide, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and petroleum ether. Aqueous solutions are acidic (pH 2.7).

[Use]Organic chemical raw materials. It is used to prepare five-membered heterocyclic compounds such as succinate, succinate ester and succinic anhydride and to produce alkyd resin. In the pharmaceutical industry, it can be used to produce sulfa drugs, vitamin A, vitamin B and hemostatic drugs. In medicine, it can be used as an antispasmodic agent, an expectorant and a diuretic. It is also used in the manufacture of dyes, adhesives, surfactants, photographic chemicals and lubricants. Succinic acid salt esters and succinic anhydride can be used to manufacture ion exchange resins, glass fiber reinforced plastics and plant growth regulators.

[Brief preparation method]

① Maleic anhydride or fumaric acid undergoes hydrogenation reaction under the action of nickel catalyst to generate succinic acid.

② Paraffin wax is oxidized to generate various carboxylic acid mixtures, which can also be separated to obtain succinic acid.

③Ammonium tartrate is produced through fermentation.
