Covestro expands TPU film production capacity in Germany

Covestro has expanded its production capacity for its Platilon® range of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) films, as well as the associated infrastructure and logistics in Bomlitz, Lower Saxony, Germany.

Epurex Films is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Covestro. The factory is responsible for the research and development, application development and production of semi-finished products. The company has invested millions of euros in expanding its TPU Film Center of Excellence.

The new capacity is designed to meet growing global demand for multi-layer TPU films. They are used in applications such as automotive interiors and construction. The breathable, waterproof specialty membrane has also proven its worth in wound care and outdoor clothing.

Thorsten, CTO of Covestro
Dr. Dreier said at the inauguration: “With the expansion of our production capacity, we are strengthening the Bomlitz site and our position as a leading supplier of specialty films. At the same time, we are investing in promising technologies and applications and creating New job opportunities.”

Aleta, Global Head of Specialty Films Business at Covestro
Richards said the expansion provides the opportunity to better meet individual customer needs and provide more sustainable products. “We have been developing customer-specific solutions with films made from alternative raw materials for some time, as we also see increasing demand in this area. The development and production of some of the biobased products will therefore be part of Bomlitz’s A new focus for the factory.”

Covestro is fully oriented towards the circular economy and aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2035. In 2022, the power supply at the Bomlitz plant will be completely switched to green electricity. Epurex
Films is one of Covestro’s three specialty film development centers in Germany. The other two centers in Leverkusen and Dormagen focus on the research, production and application of polycarbonate films.
