Barium stearate is in the form of white fine powder. The melting point is 160℃ and the relative density is 1.15. It is insoluble in water, insoluble in cold ethanol, soluble in hot ethanol, benzene, toluene and other non-polar solvents. It is water-absorbent in the air. It is heated and dissolved in organic solvents and turns into a gel after cooling. When encountering strong acid, it decomposes into stearic acid and the corresponding barium salt.
It is understood that barium stearate is toxic, with a toxicity coefficient of T=2. Acute toxicity: oral administration – rat LD50: 2506 mg/kg; oral administration – mouse LD50: 1832 mg/kg. Typical poisoning symptoms are vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, increased blood pressure, pulse disorder, etc. High concentration or repeated exposure can cause weakness, paralysis of the limbs, heart and respiratory system.
Barium stearate first aid measures are as follows:
Skin contact: Take off and isolate contaminated clothes and shoes. For small amounts of skin contact, avoid spreading the substance over an area. Keep the patient warm and quiet.
Eye contact: If skin or eyes come into contact with this substance, flush immediately with clean water for at least 20 minutes.
Inhalation: Move patient to fresh air and seek medical attention. If the patient stops breathing, give artificial respiration. If the patient ingests or inhales the substance, do not perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Use a small respirator with a one-way valve or other appropriate medical respirator. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
Ingestion: Inhalation, ingestion or skin contact with this substance may cause delayed reactions. Ensure that medical personnel understand the personal protection knowledge related to this substance and pay attention to their own protection.
