Myristic acid

Myristic acid, also known as myristic acid, is a saturated fatty acid. Scientific name: Tetradecanoic acid (tetradecanoic acid), white waxy crystalline solid, relative density 0.8439 (80°C), boiling point 250.5°C (13.3 kPa, 100 mmHg), refractive index 1.4305 (60°C), insoluble in water , soluble in ethanol and ether.

Production method: Mixed fatty acids or methyl esters of mixed fatty acids obtained from coconut oil and palm kernel oil can be obtained by vacuum fractionation during drought. Laboratory preparation can be performed by saponification of glycerol tritetradecanoyl ester and 10% sodium hydroxide solution, and then acidification with hydrochloric acid to obtain free tetradecanoic acid. It can also be prepared by the tetradecanol method.

Usage: According to the supply of myristic acid: it is mainly used as a raw material for the production of surfactants, and is used to produce sorbitan fatty acid esters and glycerin. Fatty acid esters, ethylene glycol or propylene glycol fatty acid esters, etc. It can also be used to produce isopropyl myristate, etc. Also used as defoaming agent and flavoring agent. According to my country’s GB2760-89 regulations, it can be used to prepare various edible spices.

Isopropyl myristate produced from myristic acid

Isopropyl myristate is a colorless and transparent oily liquid, insoluble in water; miscible with organic solvents such as alcohol, ether, methylene chloride, and grease.

Isopropyl myristate is a non-fat emollient and is easily absorbed by the skin. It is a component of semi-solid matrices and can also be used as a solvent for many substances in topical formulations. It is used in a variety of topical preparations and cosmetics, including bath oils, cosmetics, hair and nail care products, creams, lotions, lip balms, shaving creams, emollients, deodorants, otic suspensions, vaginal Cream. For example, isopropyl myristate is a self-emulsifying ingredient in a cold cream formulation that can be used as a base for many pharmaceuticals and dermatological medications; in cosmetics, it is stable in water and glycerin. It is also used in mixed liquids. Isopropyl myristate can be used as a penetration enhancer in transdermal absorption formulations and can be used in conjunction with therapeutic ultrasound and iontophoresis.
