SABIC launches a series of 10 LNP™
A new product portfolio of ELCRIN™ copolymer resins can reduce the carbon footprint of parts while delivering desirable performance and aesthetics. Using these polycarbonate-based copolymer materials, which contain up to 75% certified post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, can help customers advance their sustainability initiatives without sacrificing critical performance. The new LNP copolymer resin offers overall high performance compared to competing modified polycarbonate resins containing PCR content.
SABIC’s upgraded LNP copolymer resin may be suitable for use in housings for consumer electronics devices and chargers, housings for 5G base station infrastructure, and industrial components such as circuit breakers. In the automotive sector, they are used in exterior grilles, pillars and trim.
Depending on the grade, they offer low-temperature ductility, chemical and weather resistance, good flow for easy processing, transparency, a broad color range, UV stability and thin-wall flame retardancy (FR), meeting UL94 at 0.6 mm
V-0 level.
Joshua, Director of Specialty Business Management, SABIC LNP&Noryl
Chiaw said: “Specialty thermoplastics formulated with mechanically recycled content are an important part of SABIC’s net zero strategy. Our new LNP copolymer resins provide customers across multiple industries with new opportunities to significantly increase the PCR content in their applications. This is the latest example of how SABIC is leading the way with sustainable solutions that help our customers meet the growing demand for circularity from regulators, OEMs and the public.”
EnhancedPCRComposition and Performance
The new LNP copolymer resin is a significant upgrade to SABIC’s existing portfolio of materials, which previously contained PCR components. They have a higher percentage of PCR content (50% to 75%) than previous products and have received SCS for this content
Global
Services certification. In addition, they offer enhanced properties such as a wider range of colors in opaque materials, several clear options, and more flame-retardant options. All flame retardant grades in new product portfolio receive UL approval
Solutions’ yellow card certification.
One of the newly upgraded materials is LNP Elcren
EXL9253RCC copolymer resin, which contains 50% PCR content, reduces the carbon footprint while providing excellent mechanical properties. This opaque material offers low-temperature ductility down to -30°C, good chemical and weather resistance, thin-walled flame retardant (UL94
V0, 1.0 mm) and a wide color range.
Perfect replacement
Sustainable LNP copolymer resins can significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to virgin PC materials while serving as an alternative. For example, LNP EXL1484RCC resin is a resin containing 75%
A PCR-content, non-flame-retardant grade resin that reduces global warming potential (GWP) by 53% compared to SABIC’s original PC resin, while providing comparable flow and mechanical properties. Another new level of flame retardant LNP
EXL7284RCC resin, which also contains 75% PCR content, has a GWP that is 55% lower than virgin PC. Both GWP results are based on internal life cycle assessments.
In addition, SABIC said the new LNP copolymer resin grade exceeds competing modified PC products on the market made from recycled content. According to the supplier, while these competitors’ products may contain similar percentages of PCR content, they can only offer one or two of the enhanced capabilities offered by SABIC’s products.
Jenny, Head of Formulation and Applications, SABIC Asia Pacific
“We overcame the dual challenge of incorporating a high percentage of recycled content into these new materials while maintaining excellent performance,” Wang explains. “Our newly upgraded LNP materials are made possible by our team’s expertise and efficient copolymer chemistry.” High PCR content and high performance, including flame retardancy and mechanical strength, are achieved, which our customers have come to expect.”
