Special attention
Certain organic pigmentsSurface preparations can adversely affect the effectiveness of the wetting and dispersing additive. In this case, untreated pigments of the same type can be tried.
When used in coil coatings, the interaction between the cationic additive and the acid catalyst must be considered. Free acids or epoxy-blocked acids are more suitable than amine-blocked acids. This problem can be avoided by using the DISPER BYK-170 series.
Application : Paint industry
Features and Benefits
This high molecular weight additive deflocculates and stabilizes pigments through steric hindrance. DISPER BYK-163 imparts an equal charge to the pigment particles. The resulting repulsive force and steric stabilization can effectively avoid possible co-flocculation, so that the multi-pigment system will not produce color floating and blooming. The additive's deflocculating properties increase the gloss, color strength, clarity and hiding power of coatings while reducing the viscosity of the millbase.
Recommended Apps
DISPER BYK-163 has broad compatibility and can be used in various solvent-based formulations. Can also be used for post-fixing of problem paint. For some new applications, newer additives such as DISPER BYK-2163 and DISPER BYK-2164 are recommended.
recommended dosage
The amount of additives (in the form of purchase) is based on the pigment:
Inorganic Pigments |
15 -20% |
Titanium Dioxide |
4 -5 % |
Organic Pigments |
30 -60% |
Carbon black |
80 -100% |
The above data is the empirical dosage, and the optimal dosage needs to be determined through a series of experiments.
Joining method and processing guidance
For best performance, additives should be added to the millbase before adding pigments. The resin and solvent components of the grinding base are pre-mixed first, and then the additives are slowly added under constant stirring. Do not add pigments before the additives are mixed evenly. Problematic coatings can be remedied by post-addition, which requires slow addition under high shear conditions.
