［Property］ Succinic acid is named succinic acid because it exists in amber, and it also exists in fossils, seaweed, lichen, fungi It is colorless, odorless and strongly acidic monoclinic columnar crystals. There are two crystal forms: α-form is stable below 137°C; and β-form is stable above 137°C. The relative density is 1.572 (25°C), the boiling point is 235°C, the melting point is 188°C, and the refractive index is 1.450 (20°C). It sublimates when heated at the melting point, and dehydrates to generate succinic anhydride. Soluble in cold water and ethanol, easily soluble in boiling water, easily soluble in methanol, slightly soluble in acetone, slightly soluble in ether, insoluble in benzene, carbon disulfide, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and petroleum ether. The aqueous solution is acidic (pH 2.7).

［Application］Organic chemical raw material. Used in the preparation of five-membered heterocyclic compounds such as succinate, succinate and succinic anhydride, and the production of alkyd resins. In the pharmaceutical industry, it can be used to produce sulfa drugs, vitamin A, vitamin B and hemostatic drugs. In medicine, it can be used as antispasmodic, expectorant and diuretic. It is also used in the manufacture of dyes, adhesives, surfactants, photographic chemicals and lubricants. Salt esters of succinic acid and succinic anhydride can be used in the manufacture of ion exchange resins, glass fiber reinforced plastics and plant growth regulators.

①Maleic anhydride or fumaric acid is hydrogenated under the action of a nickel catalyst to generate succinic acid.

② Paraffin wax is oxidized to produce various carboxylic acid mixtures, which can also be separated to obtain succinic acid.

③Ammonium tartrate is produced by fermentation.
