［Property］ Trichloroacetic acid is a colorless rhombic hexahedral crystal, easy to absorb moisture, has a special air spider, and has a relative density of 1.629 ( 25°C). The boiling point is 197.6°C (101.3kPa), and the refractive index is 1.459 (65°C). There are two different crystals: α-type melting point is 58°C, and β-type melting point is 49.6°C. Soluble in water and methanol, ethanol, ether, acetone, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, hexane, o-xylene and other solvents. The aqueous solution is acidic (pH value of 0.1mol aqueous solution is 1.2). Since there are three C3 atoms on the methyl group, it shows strong acidity. After heating the aqueous solution of trichloroacetic acid to the boiling point, it will be decarboxylated and decomposed into chloroform and carbon dioxide. It can form salts with various inorganic and organic bases.
［Application］Used as raw material for organic synthesis and manufacture of pesticides, anhydrides and esters of trichloroacetic acid. It is an excellent herbicide, a dyeing aid, a protein precipitant, a fixative for microscope samples, and a metal surface treatment agent. It can be used as a reagent for the determination of fluoride and bile pigment, and also as an extractant for biochemical drugs such as adenosine triphosphate and placental lipopolysaccharide.
[Brief recipe]
①Prepared by complete chlorination of acetic acid. Chloroacetic acid mother liquor can be obtained by chlorination at 90-100°C in the presence of sulfur catalyst.
②It is obtained by oxidation of dichloroacetaldehyde.
