YKK announces the launch of its new DynaPel™ waterproof zippers featuring GTT EMPEL® technology. DynaPel™ is designed to be compatible with garment recycling systems, using EMPEL® technology in place of standard PU
membrane to achieve its waterproofness.
“DynaPel™ is a valuable addition to our growing line of circulating system fasteners,” said Terry, Vice President, Product Strategy, Global Sales Headquarters, YKK Corporation
Tsukumo said. “By incorporating EMPEL® technology, we can achieve the strong waterproof performance expected from YKK® products while eliminating the challenges PU poses to recycling systems.”
Traditional chemical and mechanical garment recycling systems cannot handle the polyurethane films commonly used on waterproof zippers, so the zippers need to be removed from the garment before recycling. This additional processing step often prevents recyclers from accepting PU-bearing
Zippers on clothing, resulting in unnecessary waste.
EMPEL® technology uses advanced PFAS-free green chemistry and a specialized manufacturing process that allows the chemistry to penetrate the yarn and encase it in a waterproof layer through molecular cross-linking. The molecules are cross-linked to form an extremely durable layer that is highly resistant to wear and tear and is invisible to the naked eye.
“DynaPel™ represents a new generation of sustainable, high-performance waterproof zippers,” said Tsukumo. “This is the future of zipper waterproofing.”
