BDO (1,4-butanediol) industry production capacity is concentrated in the western region, and calcium carbide method is the mainstream
BDO (1,4-butanediol) is an important chemical raw material, and its downstream applications include tetrahydrofuran (THF), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), γ-butyrolactone (GBL) and polyurethane Resin (PU), etc. Among them, tetrahydrofuran (THF) is mainly used to produce PTMEG, which is then used to synthesize spandex and copolyester ethers. PBT is mainly used to produce electronic appliances, automobiles and machinery, etc. GBL is mainly used to produce N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), PU It is mainly used in automobiles, home appliances, construction, footwear, fabrics and other fields.
Based on the good development trend of BDO (1,4-butanediol) downstream markets such as engineering plastics and chemical fibers, China’s BDO (1,4-butanediol) industry is actively expanding production capacity, prompting China’s BDO (1,4-butanediol) industry to actively expand production capacity. Alcohol) production capacity is in an overall expansion trend. According to the“China BDO (1,4-butanediol) Industry Market Monitoring and Future Development Prospects Research Report 2022-2026” released by the Industrial Research Center span>In 2021, the effective production capacity of China’s BDO (1,4-butanediol) industry is 2.340 million tons.
At present, there are about 20 domestic BDO (1,4-butanediol) industry manufacturers. Among them, the companies with larger production capacity mainly include Xinjiang Meike Chemical Co., Ltd., Xinjiang Tianye (Group) Co., Ltd., Xinjiang Blue Shantunhe Technology Co., Ltd., Xinjiang Cathay Xinhua Chemical Co., Ltd., Sinopec Great Wall Energy and Chemicals (Ningxia) Co., Ltd., Inner Mongolia Dongyuan Technology Co., Ltd., etc. The largest domestic BDO production devices are basically concentrated in western regions such as Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, and Ningxia. The three companies of Xinjiang Meike, Tianye, and Lanshan Tunhe have a total production capacity of 680,000 tons/year, accounting for 29.1% of the domestic market.
From the perspective of production technology, at present, most of the domestic BDO production capacity is the acetylenic aldehyde method, including the two production routes of calcium carbide method and natural gas method. Most of the existing production capacity uses the calcium carbide method, mainly due to the relatively sufficient supply of calcium carbide in our country. The cost is lower. In comparison, the natural gas method is rarely used, but the fundamental reason is not that the cost is too high, but that the production of acetylene from natural gas is a national restricted project, and the requirements for project approval are very high. Few companies can obtain the license to produce BDO using the natural gas method. license.
Industry researchers said that in October 2021, the National Development and Reform Commission and other departments issued the “Strict Energy Efficiency Constraints in Key Petrochemical and Chemical Industries to Promote Energy Saving and Reduction” The Carbon Action Plan (2021~2025) clearly proposes that new calcium carbide projects implement equivalent or reduced capacity replacement, and promote the accelerated exit of calcium carbide devices with 100,000 tons/year and below. Under the constraints of industrial policies, the total domestic calcium carbide production capacity will show a downward trend in the next five years, and the supply of calcium carbide will be tight for a long time, which will lead to a further increase in the cost of using calcium carbide acetylene to produce BDO (1,4-butanediol).
