On November 30, 2023, Sulzer announced the launch of CAPSUL™, a breakthrough technology that will revolutionize polycaprolactone
(PCL) production. PCL is a biodegradable polyester widely used in different industries such as packaging, textiles, agriculture and horticulture.
CAPSUL™ technology enables optimal process performance to produce premium PCL grades at competitive speeds. It joins Sulzer’s existing renewable and circular plastics technologies, including polylactic acid (PLA) process technology.
CAPSUL™ is a PCL technology developed by Sulzer Chemtech that integrates all necessary purification and polymerization stages into a single, efficient and continuous process. Drawing on Sulzer’s proven experience in separation and reaction processes, the technology has been designed to be highly versatile and suitable for various production scales. This versatility is expected to accelerate the adoption of environmentally friendly and compostable PCL.
Sulzer sees PCL as an indispensable material in global efforts to reduce plastic waste. The new CAPSUL™ technology is designed to facilitate increased production of PCL using traditional and more renewable resources. This is consistent with the company’s commitment to assist industry players in enhancing their sustainability practices. Uwe, President of Sulzer Chemical Division
Boltersdorf expressed optimism about PCL’s role in minimizing plastic waste and the company’s commitment to helping stakeholders strengthen their sustainability capabilities.
Sulzer unveiled its latest plans to improve PCL production using CAPSUL™ technology. This is a major action and upgrade effort by the company to strengthen its bioplastics product portfolio. The production will support the company’s goals of environmentally sustainable production.
