Researchers use isosorbide to prepare polyurethane acrylate resin which can be used in UV-curable coatings

A newly published paper discusses the synthesis of renewable isosorbide-based polyurethane acrylate resins for use in UV-curable coatings with tunable properties.

Isosorbide is a starch derivative obtained by dehydrating D-sorbitol extracted from corn syrup. Isosorbide is an ideal bio-based monomer that can prepare high-performance polymer materials and replace petroleum-based materials. During the research, isosorbide was used as a raw material for the preparation of polyurethane acrylate resins, with the end use being the preparation of UV-curable coatings. By adjusting the content of ε-caprolactone in the structure, the prepared coating has adjustable viscosity, thermal stability and mechanical properties, and has good hydrophilicity.

Good practical application prospects

The as-prepared UV-cured coating showed a suitable pencil hardness of 3H and a high glass transition temperature (Tg) of 74°C. According to the researchers, their study proposes to prepare UV-curable coatings with excellent comprehensive properties by adjusting the ratio of isosorbide and ε-caprolactone, which has good practical application prospects.
