TheCertiPUR-US Foam Certification Program is currently certifying bio-based bulk flexible polyurethane foam. To be certified as biobased foam, the foam must meet all standards for current foam certification and contain at least 25% biobased content.

“We applaud these foam producers who were early adopters and look forward to many others following suit,” said Crowell. “We believe bedding and upholstered furniture manufacturers will see significant environmental and marketing benefits from using bio-based foams.” benefits and will create demand for this type of certified foam.”
All certified foams must undergo emissions testing, chemical analysis and physical performance testing to meet the strict standards in the certification program’s technical guidelines. Additionally, all biobased foams are tested by BETA Laboratories in Miami, Florida, USA, to determine the percentage of biobased content.
BETA Laboratories is an ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited laboratory providing radiocarbon dating and bio-based testing services. Biobased content of product ingredients based on ASTM
D6866-22 Method B standard, which uses an accelerator mass spectrometer to measure how much carbon in a product comes from biomass. The results indicate the percentage of bio-based carbon versus fossil-derived carbon in the product.
Certified bio-based foams can have a unique, new CertiPUR-US mark, which will be an easily identifiable adaptation of the current CertiPUR-US mark and will only be used on products containing certified bio-based foams .
As with all certified foams, once a bio-based foam is certified, it must be recertified annually after six months. CertiPUR-US plans to conduct random validation testing to ensure continued compliance. Producers and their customers must also agree to new terms of use that set out guidelines for how CertiPUR-US bio-based foam can be marketed.
