Recycle coffee grounds for reuse! Avant expands its portfolio of bio-based polyolefins

Avant Announces Expansion of Its Maxxam
The BIO portfolio of bio-based polyolefins furthers its commitment to more sustainable solutions. The new combination utilizes natural fillers such as cellulose fibers or recycled coffee grounds, offering an alternative to traditional fillers made of polyolefins.

Matt Mitchell, Global Marketing Director, Avant Specialty Engineered Materials, said: “We are constantly innovating to bring new solutions to our customers that help them achieve their sustainability goals. In this case, we were able to leverage this Taking material that would otherwise go to waste and giving it value contributes to a more circular economy.”

Initially launched at K in October 2022, BIO bio-based polyolefins are formulated with bio-based resins and naturally-sourced fillers such as olive seed flour. The portfolio now includes newly added raw materials with up to 40% of fillers derived from cellulose fibers or powders made from recycled coffee grounds. They can be based on primary resins or bio-based resins. Combining bio-based resins with natural fillers further improves sustainability and reduces the carbon footprint of products compared to fossil-based alternatives.

In addition to the sustainability benefits, the use of bio-based fillers improves lightweight performance compared to conventional polymers filled with talc, calcium carbonate or glass fibers. Both the cellulose and coffee filled grades have good gloss and surface finish. Coffee-filled grades offer unique differentiation through visual appearance, and cellulose-filled grades are easy to color and exhibit better mechanical properties than mineral-filled alternatives.

Based on customer requirements, these formulations can be customized to provide additional performance characteristics such as scratch, UV, and mold, fungus, and bacteria resistance.

BIO bio-based polyolefins Bio-based polyolefins with cellulose fibers or coffee grounds can be used in automotive interiors (trim parts, trunk side liners, pillars, t-cup holders), consumer products (table and kitchen items, household supplies), and packing caps and closures. They are currently manufactured in Europe, but are available on the global market.
