Polyplastics Launches New DURANEX (R) PBT 201EB Resin for Automotive Millimeter Wave Radar

Polyplastics Group announces the launch of a new conductive grade of DURANEX (R) polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) for millimeter-wave radar applications in the automotive industry. DURANEX (R) PBT
201EB offers the advantage of electromagnetic wave shielding as an added effect of electrical conductivity. Therefore, the material contributes to less assembly work and lower costs.

In today’s advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), mmWave radar is a sensor that measures the distance, speed, and angle of approaching objects such as cars by transmitting and receiving radio waves (electromagnetic waves) in the mmWave band. The market for mmWave radar is rapidly expanding due to its ability to accurately identify distance and other parameters in bad weather and at night, and it is increasingly being used for peripheral monitoring of vehicles, including the rear side.

Polyplastics has been working on producing materials for millimeter-wave radars by various methods. Used in radio wave absorbing materials like DURANEX (R) PBT
Conductive grades like 201EB help reduce customers’ processing costs and increase design freedom.

Previously, electromagnetic wave-absorbing materials were partially integrated on the back of the radome that emits electromagnetic waves. Adding electromagnetic wave absorbing material can reduce millimeter wave reflection noise and suppress detection error (improve detection accuracy). However, the process of attaching traditional rubber electromagnetic wave absorbing materials to the back of the radome has been a problem.

DURANEX (R) PBT 201EB has the same PBT resin matrix composition as radome, and it also bonds very well due to its two-shot injection molding capabilities.
