SABIC takes the lead in launching new extrusion-grade materials that can be used in the manufacturing process of large automotive parts

September 20 – Global diversified chemicals company Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC)’s BLUEHERO™ program aims to support the automotive industry in creating reliable, safe and efficient electric vehicles and optimizing electric vehicle battery components. Through this program, SABIC introduces new extrusion-grade flame retardant polymer solutions that provide a potentially advantageous alternative to traditional metal sheet. These advancements help automotive customers achieve their electrification goals and drive global adoption of electric vehicle batteries.

Extrusion-grade materials, made from SABIC’s proprietary materials, offer a unique alternative to traditional metal, extrusion and injection molding, allowing customers to manufacture complex thermoplastic structural parts more efficiently and cost-effectively. These industry-first extrusion-grade materials further enrich SABIC’s materials portfolio and expand its ecosystem of BLUEHERO solutions designed to accelerate the electrification of the automotive market.

New extrusion-grade materials include two breakthrough resin materials: PP compound H1090 and STAMAX™
30YH611, both developed exclusively by SABIC, are used in the upper covers, casings and module separators of electric vehicle battery packs. These extrusion-grade materials have melt strength suitable for extrusion molding and low melt rheology, two key properties that make the material flexible enough for manufacturers to produce components that meet the intended design specifications without breakage. This melt strength process increases design freedom while delivering structural performance and strength.

In addition to flame retardant properties, resin materials also have leading steel strength, strength and impact resistance within a certain temperature range. These materials are available worldwide and offer excellent processability. This is good news for businesses looking to put SABIC solutions into production.

Dealing with the risk of overheating

Thermal accidents are always a hot topic related to electric vehicle battery components. The SABIC team developed a solution that integrated high melt strength with bimodal distribution in the polymer matrix, producing a high-strength, highly moldable flame-retardant fiberglass material with thermal properties that help delay or contain thermal cycling. This means that if a thermal accident occurs, SABIC materials will mitigate the effects of thermal runaway on the battery pack or other parts of the vehicle.

Why it matters

As the automotive industry continues to move toward an electrified future, demand for electric vehicle components is growing. SABIC understands the importance of enhancing the value of its customers’ product portfolios and providing additional benefits. SABIC’s extrusion-grade materials help customers develop thermoforming solutions for large, complex structural parts while enhancing low-cost, lightweight production, design freedom, and thermal and electrical insulation properties through the extrusion process.
