Purpose
Formulating Two-Part Polyurethane Coatings and Adhesives
storage stability
Curing agent must be kept in a sealed container. Whenever product is transferred from one container to another, moisture (including airborne moisture) must be prevented from entering. Therefore, when small quantities of product are to be used frequently, they should be taken not from the large shipping container, but from a specially designed bottle of appropriate volume. In addition to the original container, twist jars constructed of aluminum or glass are particularly suitable for storing hardener. Suitable caps include screw caps with sealing gaskets. Gaskets made of materials that can release alkaline substances are not suitable. Storing the product at low temperatures will form crystals, but warming slowly (to room temperature) will dissolve the crystals.
Product Safety
The curing agent is composed of polyisocyanate and ethyl acetate, the former The volatility of the latter is low, while the latter is volatile and flammable. Therefore, precautions appropriate for use with flammable organic solvents must be taken. Dust mist generated when handling adhesives containing hardeners must be removed with an extractor fan to ensure that there is absolutely no inhalation hazard.
Compatibility
The solvents that can be used to dilute the curing agent are: methyl acetate, acetic acid Ethyl esters, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, and toluene. All these solvents must be free of water and alcohol.
Purpose
Properly formulated two-part adhesive after addition of hardener has a limited validity period and must therefore be used before the expiration date. The above-mentioned pot life depends not only on the polymer content of the adhesive, but also on other components such as resin, anti-aging agent and solvent. After the pot life expires, which typically lasts from a few hours to a working day, the adhesive becomes increasingly difficult to process and its viscosity rises rapidly until the formulation eventually gels irreversibly.
